Why did you choose accounting for your career? Why ACCA?

I chose a career in accounting as it is a flexible profession that affords those who hold an accounting qualification the ability to work in a variety of different fields. This was important to me as it gave me peace of mind knowing that I wasn’t pigeonholing myself. I chose ACCA for much the same reason; it is by far the most flexible option for students when getting their qualification, allowing for exams to be done piecemeal over the four sittings each year, as opposed to a block of exams once a year. ACCA is also internationally recognised; this allows ACCA members to follow opportunities which would not be possible with other accounting qualifications.

What field of work or study were you in before you started your ACCA exams?

Before I started my ACCA exams, I studied Economics and German at Trinity College, Dublin.

Why did you choose Accountancy School?

I chose Accountancy School as they have an excellent reputation for providing top quality tuition, which is evident from the number of prize winners they have each sitting. I wanted to give myself the best possible opportunity to get through my exams unscathed, so it was a no-brainer to go with Accountancy School (and it paid off!).

What advice would you give to someone starting their ACCA journey?

I would say that preparation in all aspects of the ACCA journey is key. From staying aware of current topics that may show up on exams to ensuring that you know where your exam is taking place and what you need to bring with you. If you consistently prepare the small things on a daily basis, the big results will follow. I would also say to find yourself a good tuition provider and listen to your lecturers — they tend to know a thing or two about these exams. A good quote I remember from one of my lecturers is “No one is born knowing how to pass these exams.” Be patient with yourself and try to take as much learning from the topics as possible, and you’ll be surprised how often ACCA exam topics pop up in post-qualification work!

What is your career goal after gaining your ACCA qualification?

At last year’s prize winner night, I had said that my post-qualification career goal was to get a job in FP&A. I am delighted to have already achieved that career goal. At the moment, my career goal is to continue to learn and develop myself and build a strong and successful career in FP&A.
